Nice work!! There are a few items, like Wild Yam (and I've called the obvious stores) and Smart Dogs, I can't find Downtown, or Luray, but I can pretty much fill my needs within walking distance of my house. I hope to see this growth continue!!!

Wal-Mart is not a locally owned business, it's a local employer, and I believe Food Lion or the Dollar Store falls into that same category. Wal-Mart appeals because of it's low prices (for a variety of reasons) which could lead to a whole different discussion that doesn't apply here. I want to shop at local businesses before I drive 40 minutes to shop somewhere else and I think the more we support the locally owned businesses the more they will offer to us!

Locally made and grown products are still another category and the more we purchase and support those products the more we will gain also!!

I stopped shopping at Wal-Mart 6 years ago for a variety of what I see as ethical reasons.
The first year I gave up Wal-Mart I challenged myself to buy all my Christmas gifts from locally owned stores in Page County. I managed to get all my gifts in the county and stayed in my budget. The added plus was I only bought a couple of items that were from China and I didn't buy anything plastic. Since then I have made an effort to patronize local businesses all year round.
Studies have shown that locally owned businesses have a much greater positive impact on local economies than big box stores and other international and national chain businesses. I won't quote statistics here but the results of many of these studies are summarized here: http://www.newrules.org/retail/key-studies-walmart-and-bigbox-retail
I think the definition of "local business" should be a business that is owned locally. Wal-Mart doesn't count.
